President John Mahama arrived in Accra late on Saturday evening after representing Ghana at the formal inauguration of Gabon’s newly elected head of state, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, at Libreville’s iconic Sports Stadium. General Nguema, who led the military junta that ousted long-time ruler Ali Bongo nearly two years ago, secured a decisive victory in the April 12, 2025 presidential election, garnering just over 90 percent of the valid votes.
Over the course of his two-day visit, President Mahama attended a state banquet hosted in his honour and held substantive talks with President Nguema on deepening economic, security, and cultural ties between Ghana and Gabon. Both leaders underscored their commitment to regional integration and pledged to collaborate on initiatives in energy, trade facilitation, and joint efforts to combat transnational crime. Mahama’s presence at the ceremony reinforced Ghana’s long-standing foreign policy principle of “good neighbourliness,” illustrating his administration’s dedication to solidarity within West and Central Africa.
Accompanying the president was a high-powered delegation that included Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; National Security Advisor Prosper D. K. Bani; Dr Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President; and Stan Xoese Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations). Upon his return, President Mahama is expected to brief Parliament and his Cabinet on the outcomes of the visit, focusing on concrete measures to translate diplomatic goodwill into mutually beneficial projects for both nation
