In a statement released on Sunday, September 28, the Council welcomed President John Mahama’s indication that declaring a state of emergency over the matter remains an option, as well as recent measures to classify forests and water bodies as security zones. Still, the CCG insisted that these steps are insufficient on their own and called for more decisive action.
Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose, the Council’s General Secretary, emphasized that galamsey continues to inflict severe and irreversible damage on Ghana’s environment—polluting rivers, destroying forests, and undermining livelihoods nationwide. The CCG framed illegal mining as not just an environmental concern, but also a moral, social, and national security crisis, warning of risks to food security, public health, and the country’s sustainability.
The Council urged the government to enforce laws “without fear or favour,” and to ensure that not only the miners, but also those who finance or benefit from galamsey, are held accountable—regardless of their social or political standing. It further called on chiefs, business leaders, politicians, security agencies, and all citizens to take an active role in the fight, stressing that it cannot be left to government alone.
Concluding its appeal, the CCG urged unity and resolve: future generations deserve a Ghana where rivers are clean, farms are fertile, and communities live with dignity and peace.
