On May 29, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama pledged to clear all outstanding nurses' allowance arrears. Addressing a durbar in Kintampo during his nationwide 'Thank You Tour' in the Bono East Region, he announced that payments from January 2025 onwards would be processed through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to ensure accuracy and prevent irregularities.1748573741_68391e2d46d59.jpg

President Mahama's commitment to resolving the arrears has been met with appreciation from various stakeholders. The National Health Students’ Association of Ghana (NAHSAG) lauded the decision to streamline payments through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, expressing hope that this move would eliminate delays and enhance the financial stability of nursing trainees.

This announcement comes in the context of ongoing concerns about delayed payments to nursing trainees. In May 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced the release of GH¢177 million to settle nursing trainee allowance arrears. However, trainee nurses and midwives reported that, despite the promise, no payments had been made, with some stating that the amount was insufficient to cover the total arrears owed.

President Mahama's assurance aims to address these longstanding issues and reinforce the government's commitment to supporting healthcare professionals. His 'Thank You Tour' continues, with planned addresses in the Bono Region at Sunyani Jubilee Park on May 30 and in the Ahafo Region at Goaso on May 31.
