Armed security has been stepped up at Manhyia Palace in response to a series of violent shootings in the Asawase district, including the fatal attack on the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region.
This security surge, involving both police and military personnel, aims to reinforce protection for the palace and its surroundings amid rising public concern.
The escalation follows two recent deadly incidents in Asawase: the assassination of Alhaji Abdul‑Malik Azenbe—the Kusasi Chief—on Wednesday, July 23, followed by the shooting death of an unidentified man on Friday, July 25. Both attacks were reportedly carried out by individuals on motorbikes.
In response, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has implemented new restrictions for the Asawase area:
-
Motorbike operations are prohibited after 7 p.m.
-
Unregistered bikes, mopeds without lights, and the wearing of smocks (often used to conceal weapons) are now banned.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, emphasized that these measures are critical for restoring order and preventing further violence.
Meanwhile, investigations by security agencies are underway to determine whether the two incidents are linked. Residents have been urged to come forward with credible information to help identify those responsible.
