President John Dramani Mahama has announced a three-day national mourning period beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025, in honor of eight individuals who perished in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
In a statement released the same day, the President confirmed that all his official activities and public engagements have been suspended for the remainder of the week The Office of the Chief of Staff has further directed that national flags be flown at half‑mast across the country until further notice.
The crash occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, as the Ghana Armed Forces Z‑9 helicopter was en route to Obuasi .
Among the deceased were Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, along with Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chair Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three military crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane‑Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Search and rescue teams have since recovered all bodies from the remote crash site. Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from across political, civil society, religious, and international communities, recognizing the service and sacrifice of those lost
