Government Allocates $1 Million to Enhance Vegetable Production Among Peasant Farmers
On April 14, 2025, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, revealed plans to provide $1 million to more than 1,500 peasant farmers in Northern Ghana. This initiative, part of the broader Feed Ghana Project, aims to significantly boost vegetable production while empowering grassroots agricultural communities.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Minister Opoku pointed out that many of these farmers, who are heavily involved in cultivating tomatoes and other vegetables, often lack the financial means to scale up their operations. To remedy this, the government will extend direct financial support, allowing these registered farmers to enhance their production capacity.
The disbursement will be formalized during a signing ceremony on April 16, 2025, when Minister Opoku will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Apex Bank. This agreement is expected to streamline the distribution process, with efforts already underway to organize the farmers into cooperatives to further support their activities.
In addition to the monetary assistance, the government will also offer technical support. Improved seeds and quality farming inputs are set to be distributed, ensuring that the farmers can achieve higher yields and even explore year-round cultivation. Minister Opoku emphasized that the technical know-how available locally positions Ghana favorably, potentially exceeding the agricultural output seen in neighboring Burkina Faso.
This move marks a critical step in modernizing Ghana’s agricultural sector and reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting the backbone of the economy—its peasant farmers.
