NPP's Chairman Wontumi reports to police following a failed security operation at his Kumasi residence amid illegal mining allegations

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), voluntarily surrendered to the Ghana Police Service following a failed security operation at his Kumasi residence. On May 23, 2025, operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) attempted to execute a court-approved search warrant at his home. The operation escalated when Wontumi raised an alarm, drawing a crowd of supporters and leading to a tense standoff. Negotiations between the operatives and Wontumi's legal team resulted in an agreement for him to present himself to the police on Monday.

The state is reportedly investigating Wontumi for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities through his company, Akonta Mining. Earlier this month, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources announced the termination of Akonta Mining's lease, a decision Wontumi is currently contesting in court.

Wontumi's lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, expressed concern over the manner of the initial operation, describing the early morning confrontation by heavily armed security personnel as potentially constituting a breach. However, Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi defended the operation, asserting its legality and adherence to due process.

Following Wontumi's detention, hundreds of NPP supporters gathered at the Kumasi Central Police Station, demanding his release. The supporters, led by some party executives, vowed to remain at the station until their chairman was released on bail. Security personnel, including military officers, were deployed to maintain order at the scene.

Wontumi has since been charged with assaulting a public officer and is expected to be arraigned in court. The situation has intensified political tensions in the Ashanti Region, with concerns over the implications for the NPP and the broader political landscape.
