MTN Ghana CEO spotlights Ghana’s vital role in Africa’s digital transformation—urging 5G, mobile money growth, and cyber inclusion.

During the conclusion of a two-day visit to Accra, MTN Group Chief Executive Ralph Mupita spotlighted Ghana as one of MTN’s most strategic markets. He emphasized the country’s significant role in contributing to MTN’s robust first-half performance in 2025, stating: “Ghana has played a vital role in achieving these results. Without MTN Ghana, our Group results would not be as impressive” .

As part of the “Bright Conversations” dialogue series, Mupita reiterated Ghana’s position not just as a market, but as a pivotal partner in shaping Africa’s digital narrative. He noted that decisions taken in Ghana influence how millions across the continent will connect, trade, and innovate .

Addressing the urgent need for technological advancement, Mupita called on governments and industry leaders to accelerate the rollout of 5G, bolster cyber resilience, and promote digital inclusion to fully tap into the continent’s growing digital economy .

Highlighting current gaps in network technology, he acknowledged that Ghana remains the only major MTN market without access to 5G, although discussions with Ghana’s Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation are underway. Mupita stressed the transformative potential of 5G in sectors such as mining, logistics, and home broadband—owing to its low latency and enhanced connectivity capabilities .

On consumer affordability, Mupita conceded that telecom operators must strike a balance between significant capital investment and accessible pricing. “Numerous factors need to align to enhance affordability and expand service offerings,” he remarked .

He also emphasized the rapid expansion of MTN’s mobile money platform, now serving around 63 million users across its markets. While the group doesn’t currently view itself as a bank, he suggested that pursuing a banking license could be possible if customer demand warrants it .

Looking forward, Mupita expressed optimism about the period leading up to 2030, stating that Africa’s next growth phase hinges on creating an environment conducive to investment, digital infrastructure expansion, and robust cybersecurity frameworks .
