Pyramids FC achieved a historic milestone by securing their first CAF Champions League title, defeating South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns 2–1 in the second leg of the final at Cairo's 30 June Stadium. This victory resulted in a 3–2 aggregate win, marking a significant achievement for the Egyptian club.
The match commenced with Pyramids taking the lead in the 23rd minute, as Fiston Mayele capitalized on a defensive error to score his ninth goal of the tournament. Ahmed Samy extended the lead in the 56th minute with a diving header from a free-kick, a goal confirmed after a VAR review. Sundowns responded in the 75th minute when Iqraam Rayners volleyed in a goal, but Pyramids maintained their composure to secure the win.
This triumph positions Pyramids as the 13th different club to win the Champions League since its modern format began in 1997. Established in 2008 as Al Assiouty and rebranded in 2018 following significant investment, Pyramids have rapidly ascended in African football.
Despite their dominance in South African football, Sundowns couldn't replicate their 2016 continental success. They now turn their focus to the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where they'll face teams like Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund.
Pyramids, meanwhile, aim for a domestic double as they prepare to face Zamalek in the Egyptian Cup final.
