A concise summary of today’s developments: Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, Member of Parliament and Health Committee member, has publicly urged Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to issue an unqualified apology to resolve the ongoing Tamale Teaching Hospital doctors’ strike—arguing that such a gesture would demonstrate good faith and could ultimately save lives.
Background
On April 23, doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) announced an indefinite suspension of emergency and outpatient services, citing “unwarranted attacks” by both the Health Minister and the Tamale North MP as the catalyst for their walkout.
The striking physicians are demanding an unqualified apology from Minister Akandoh and MP Alhassan Suhuyini to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, the entire TTH medical staff, and particularly the Accident and Emergency Department personnel. Beyond that, they’ve also presented a detailed list of urgent logistical and infrastructural needs—ranging from stable water and power to sufficient oxygen and essential clinical supplies—in order to restore safe patient care.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on April 24, Dr. Agyemang acknowledged the legitimacy of the doctors’ concerns but implored them to resume duties immediately to avert a public health crisis in the Northern Region. At the same time, he called on Minister Akandoh to reflect, demonstrate humility, and offer a sincere apology as a show of statesmanship.
According to Dr. Agyemang, an apology from the minister would signal genuine goodwill and pave the way for constructive dialogue. He stressed that, once apologies are tendered, both sides can focus on meeting the doctors’ critical resource requests—such as uninterrupted electricity, continuous oxygen delivery, and restocking of gloves, gauze, syringes, and other supplies—to ensure that TTH’s services resume in full.
Dr. Agyemang warned that without immediate action from the minister, the strike risks endangering countless lives. He reiterated that a timely apology, coupled with concrete steps to address the hospital’s needs, could defuse tensions and restore essential medical services at TTH.
